But something did happen. Your website was unreachable in specific regions — and you had no visibility into it.

The internet isn't a monolith. It's a mesh of thousands of networks — and the path from a user's device to your server changes depending on where they are.
DNS is distributed. When a user in Jakarta queries your domain, they're not hitting the same DNS server as a user in Chicago. If your DNS provider's anycast node in Southeast Asia is misconfigured or down, users in that region get NXDOMAIN errors — while the rest of the world works fine.
Real scenario: A DNS provider's Singapore PoP serves stale records for 4 hours. Users in Southeast Asia can't reach your site. Your monitoring in Virginia sees nothing wrong.
BGP determines how packets travel across the internet. A misconfigured route announcement can send traffic on absurd detours — or into a black hole. These routing issues are often region-specific. Traffic from Brazil might work perfectly while traffic from Argentina gets dropped.
Real scenario: An ISP in Latin America announces a bad route. Your site becomes unreachable for 3 million users. Your US-based monitoring shows 100% uptime.
Your CDN has 200 edge locations. Each is an independent point of failure. An edge in Sydney might serve corrupted content. An edge in Frankfurt might have an expired certificate. The CDN status page says "All Systems Operational" because their aggregate health is fine — your users in those regions disagree.
Real scenario: CDN edge in Mumbai returns 503 for 6 hours. Other edges work perfectly. If you only monitor from the US, you see nothing.
Some ISPs have poor peering with certain hosting providers or IP ranges. A congested peering point can turn a fast website into an unusable one for millions of users on that ISP — while users on other networks in the same city have no issues.
Real scenario: A major Indonesian ISP throttles traffic to AWS IP ranges during peak hours. Users experience 15-second page loads. Users on other ISPs load in 800ms.
The common thread: Every one of these failures is location-specific. They don't affect your origin server. They don't show up in your APM. They're invisible from where you're sitting — unless you actively monitor your website from multiple locations around the world.

More locations = fewer surprises from angry customer emails.
Measure every phase: DNS resolution, TCP handshake, TLS negotiation, time to first byte, content transfer. When something is slow or failing, you need to know which phase is responsible — otherwise, you're debugging blindly.
"It's slow" isn't actionable. "450ms DNS from Tokyo" is.
Traceroute shows you exactly which network hop is adding latency or dropping packets. Historical data lets you compare current performance against baselines. Together, they tell you if something is newly broken or has always been suboptimal.
Evidence-based escalation gets faster responses from providers.

Check Google Analytics, Cloudflare analytics, or server access logs to see which countries and cities drive traffic. Your monitoring locations should match your user geography — monitoring from Frankfurt doesn't help if your users are in Manila.
Fewer than 50 locations leaves significant gaps. Ensure coverage in underserved regions: Southeast Asia, Latin America, Africa, Eastern Europe, and Oceania. These are often where problems hide undetected.
Monitor your signup page, checkout flow, login endpoint, and key API routes. A homepage that works means nothing if your users can't complete a purchase or log into their account.
Configure DNS, TCP, TLS, and TTFB timing. Set up traceroute and MTR for when you need to diagnose routing issues. Without this data, you'll know something is wrong but not what to fix.
Don't just alert on global outages. Get notified when a specific region exceeds latency thresholds or availability drops — even if the rest of the world is fine. Regional degradation is often a precursor to larger issues.
"Is 250ms from Singapore good or bad?" You only know if you have historical context. Establish baseline performance for each region. Watch for gradual degradation — problems that develop slowly are easy to miss until they become outages.
Spend 10 minutes each week reviewing regional performance. Look for regions with consistently higher latency or lower availability. These patterns reveal problems that real-time alerts might miss.
When you contact your CDN, hosting provider, or DNS service about a regional issue, bring traceroute data, timing breakdowns, and historical charts. "Users in Brazil are complaining" gets dismissed. "Here's 7 days of traceroute showing 400ms at your São Paulo edge" gets attention.

Single-location monitoring tests connectivity from one point on the internet to your server. It tells you nothing about the experience of users in other regions. DNS can resolve differently by geography. Routing paths vary by location. CDN edges fail independently. ISPs have different peering arrangements. It depends on your user distribution, but more is better. If your users are concentrated in a few countries, cover those specifically. Cloud providers (AWS, GCP, Azure) have excellent interconnects between their regions. A check from AWS ap-southeast-1 to your AWS us-west-2 server often travels over private cloud backbone networks with consistent, low latency. That's not how your users connect. Real users traverse public internet infrastructure with all its variability — ISP peering, transoceanic cables, regional routing quirks. Monitoring from non-cloud vantage points gives a more realistic picture.
The problem is knowing when to run it. By the time a user complains, the issue might have been ongoing for hours — or might have already resolved. Continuous monitoring catches issues as they happen. And if you need to debug, having historical traceroute data shows you what the network path looked like during the incident, not just after it's over.
Point to your analytics: what percentage of users come from outside your monitoring coverage? Calculate the revenue from those regions. Then consider: if your site was down for 4 hours in those regions and you didn't know, what would that cost?
