FAQs

What is TTFB (Time to First Byte)?
TTFB measures the time from when the browser sends a request until it receives the first byte of the response. It includes DNS lookup, TCP connection, TLS handshake, and server processing time. Lower TTFB means faster initial page load.
What's a good TTFB?
For optimal performance: under 200ms is excellent (green), 200-500ms is acceptable (yellow), and over 500ms needs improvement (red). CDNs and edge caching can significantly reduce TTFB for global audiences.
Why does TTFB vary by location?
TTFB is affected by physical distance (network latency), CDN presence, server location, and regional internet infrastructure. Using a CDN or edge servers can provide consistent TTFB globally.
How is this different from ping?
Ping uses ICMP to test basic network connectivity and latency. HTTP tests measure actual web server performance including SSL/TLS handshake, server processing, and content delivery. HTTP tests better reflect real user experience.
